At the end of SOAR², you’ll have an opportunity to bring together what you’ve learned and practice talking about your research with your fellow participants.

The goal is not to give a polished research presentation. Instead, this is a chance to practice explaining your research, reflect on something you want to take with you from SOAR², and learn from one another in a friendly and supportive environment.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to prepare along the way. Activities and reflections throughout the three days will help you develop your ideas, think about how SOAR² connects to your research, and practice communicating your work.

The 1-1-1-1 format

Your Open Research Plan presentation is designed to be short and simple:

1 MINUTE

Talk about your research. Briefly introduce a research project you are currently working on, have worked on, or would like to pursue. Focus on giving your audience enough context to understand what you are interested in and why.

1 TAKEAWAY

Share one thing from SOAR² that you want to bring into your research. This could be a practice, tool, idea, or perspective from any part of the program. Briefly explain what you took away and how it might influence the way you approach research going forward (~30 seconds).

1 QUESTION

Take one question from the audience. After you share, the audience will have an opportunity to ask you a question. You don’t need to have every answer! Part of talking about research is learning to think through questions and engage in scholarly conversation.

1 SLIDE

Use one slide to support what you share. Use the template so you do not need to design a presentation from scratch (see below).


Preparing Your Slide

We will use one shared Google slide deck for all Open Research Plan presentations. To access this slide deck, you will need to sign in using your UCSB credentials.

Your slide is already in the deck and labeled with your name. Please edit only the slide with your name on it. You do not need to add a new slide or change the order of the slides.

Use the prompts in the template to help you decide what to include. Because you will only have about one minute, your slide should support what you say rather than contain everything you plan to say.


What Happens During the Session?

We will present directly from the shared slide deck. The slides are already arranged in presentation order (assigned through a random number generator). When your slide is up, that’s your turn share.

You’ll have about one minute to talk about your research and another minute to share your SOAR² takeaway and take one question from the audience. Then we’ll move on to the next person.

Most importantly, this is a space to practice, reflect, and learn from each other. We’re not looking for perfection — we’re looking forward to hearing about what interests you and what you’ll carry forward from SOAR².
