Module 2: Data in Practice

Module Description

Work hands-on with data and learn how to organize, explore, and visualize it effectively. You’ll compare spreadsheet- and code-based approaches and see how thoughtful data organization and computational notebooks can make research more transparent, reproducible, and reusable. You’ll also practice thinking critically about what your data can—and cannot—tell you.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• Distinguish common types and stages of research data
• Apply good practices for structuring and organizing data
• Analyze and visualize a small dataset using spreadsheet tools
• Compare spreadsheet- and code-based approaches to data analysis, including their implications for transparency, reproducibility, and reuse
• Evaluate the limitations of a dataset and the conclusions that can reasonably be drawn from it
